Creative genius of Nepalese entrepreneurs; Product + Mandu = Brand name
There is an interesting phenomenon going on in Nepal when it comes to naming start-ups. A simple mathematical formula to name a brand: Product + Mandu = Brand’s name. For example, Foodmandu, Bizmandu, Raksimandu, Taximandu. What is evident is that there is lethargy and lack of creativity in newer startups.
What seems to be a running theme with brands and media agencies is that of ‘riding the trend’. Building a good brand starts with how one names the brand. However, it seems there is a sort of a creative slumber here in Nepal.
A brand’s name is the first point of contact to a customer. Ergo, it is important that any business gives serious thought in naming their brand that reflects their value. Additionally, it is important for a brand to question itself whether the name is easy to pronounce; whether the name reflect yours and your business values; and whether the name is unique?
Let’s have a look at some of the most recognizable and successful local and global brands:
Amazon
Target
Khukuri
Bajeko Sekuwa
Burger House
One parallel that you will find across these brands is the unique branding they have adopted in naming their business. Did you know Google was named BackRub first? Imagine one saying ‘Let’s Backrub’ instead of ‘Let’s Google’. Similarly, Pepsi was called Brad’s drink. The fact that the earlier brand names elicit laughter without intending to, probably led to renaming their brand to what we know them today!
For any new entrepreneur, a large part of their homework goes to building a brand, as much as they do to build a product. Creating a new name that connotes positive emotions to potential customers is an arduous task. So, it makes sense in some level that businesses have adopted ‘Mandu’. However, it is unclear what leverage ‘Mandu’ provides to new businesses. Additionally, the name might create trademark issues if/when the business wants to expand.
BrandGuff is sick of ‘Mandu’ everywhere!! We hope entrepreneurs become as creative with their brand name as they are with their product!
