5 Expensive Nepal Based Brands in the World
Very seldom do we hear about expensive Nepali brands flashing their presence in the international market. Yet, there are a number of high-priced brands based in the country that have drawn the attention of people throughout the globe. Bijay Rai, a Nepali youtuber, published a video in 2020 mentioning five pricey brands with their origins in the Himalayan nation. Let’s take a look at them:
Himalayan Pet Supply
The first brand in the list will certainly trigger Nepalese Chhurpi lovers. Yes, Himalayan Pet Supply, founded by Suman Shrestha, Sujan Shrestha and Nishes Shrestha, has built a brand out of the beloved ‘Nepalese traditional hard cheese’ by marketing it as a dog chew. Whether you like it or not, one thing remains true; the dogs love it and it’s expensive! That’s right, foreigners are willing to pay hefty dollars ($180.49 for 3 lbs) to feed their dogs Chhurpi, which Nepalese purchase with only a couple of rupees for themselves to chew and very likely, not their pets.
Kobold Himalaya Everest
Michael Kobold, the founder of Kobold, envisioned the Himalaya Everest watch after his ascent of Mount Everest. When a Nepali goldsmith crafted a ring for Michael’s wife using a small piece of rock fetched from a few yards below Everest’s summit, he visualized a watch with the same rock as its dial. Kobold, then, opened its flagship store in Kathmandu with 25 pieces of Himalaya Everest watches. The first edition of the watches have sold at more than $16,500 in the global market. The latest edition, Himalaya Everest II, is priced at $24,500 and $32,500 depending on a choice of two case materials i.e. Aerospace-Grade Titanium and 18K Rose Gold, respectively.
Sherpa Adventure Gear
Established in 2003 by Tashi Sherpa, the company employs more than 300 people from the underprivileged communities of Nepal. The brand boasts a socially responsible vision of providing education opportunities to the deprived children from the rural communities of the country. After its recent collaboration with Innov8, Sherpa Adventure Gear offers clothing items throughout the globe via physical retails and e-commerce platforms. Although not exorbitant, Sherpa’s products are premium priced with the cheapest tops beginning from $30.
Ghurka
Ghurka, synonymous with the Nepalese district ‘Gorkha’, is a brand that sells premium goods made using the finest leather. Founded in 1975 by Marley Hodgson, the brand draws its design inspiration from the military gear of the fierce Gurkha Army. Ghurka offers a variety of leather goods such as handbags, luggages, wallets, backpacks and so on. They are extravagantly priced with some crossing the $3000 mark.
Yarchagumba Whiskey
The whiskey, consisting an ingredient known as Yarchagumba which many Nepalese refer to as ‘Jewel of Nepal’, made a noteworthy mark in the global platform. Manufactured by Everest Herbs Processing Pvt. Ltd, the first production batch of the beverage consisted of 11,000 bottles. The brand remarkably sold 10,000 pieces in Nepal and the remaining 1,000 pieces abroad in a short period without any advertisement. The 750 ml bottle was priced at Rs 10,000 excluding taxes in Nepal and $249 excluding taxes overseas.
