Best Commercials to Indulge in this World Cup 2022
This year’s World Cup has been a subject of heated discussion due to the controversies surrounding it. Distressing cases about the harsh working conditions of migrant workers in Qatar have surfaced in global media channels, followed by a detestable ban on homosexuals. Influential personalities, celebrities and large media houses have condemned this year’s FIFA World Cup, but to no avail. None of the seven sponsors of FIFA have announced any changes to their marketing practices to reflect human rights concerns. Likewise, Qatar has not hinted at any intent to compensate the bereaved families.
Despite being despicable, the massive audience that this year’s FIFA World Cup has gathered is a money-spinner for marketers. Ads featuring celebrity football stars have presented a euphoric experience for viewers who have shown no signs of getting bothered by the controversies surrounding the sporting event. So, here is a list of ads to indulge yourselves in this World Cup 2022.
Nike – Footballverse
Nike’s football commercials, particularly during the World Cup period, never fail to overwhelm viewers. This year the brand has decided to jump into the ‘Verse” bandwagon (metaverse, Marvel Multiverse) for branding purposes. The ad brings the best players of our generation like Mbappe and Cristiano Ronaldo together with the legends of history (Ronaldo, Ronaldinho) in a science experiment dramatized by hilarious characters.
Pepsi – Nutmeg Royale
Nutmeg Royale is a sight to behold! The ad begins with what is seemingly impossible in a realistic game – Messi getting nutmegged while he tries to reach for a can of Pepsi. The ad then unfolds into a football game between the local townspeople and Messi, Pogba and Ronaldinho; all while the legendary football players get nutmegged occasionally throughout the ad.
Byju’s – A Letter to Lionel Messi
A letter to Lionel Messi is a heart-warming work by the Indian Multinational Edtech company Byju’s. The commercial showcases the impact Lionel Messi (Byju’s brand ambassador), as one of the greatest players of all time, has had on the lives of football enthusiasts.
Frito-Lay – Soccer or Football?
Comedic to its core, Frito-lay’s ad featuring David Beckham gives a jocular display of the never-ending debate between Americans and the rest of the world. Do you call it Soccer or Football?
Puma – Find Your Fearless
Puma has capitalized on the wondrous moment of the FIFA World Cup to execute a brilliant campaign. Find Your Fearless is the brand’s attempt at encouraging the young to take action while doing the things they desire. The ad does so by juxtaposing anecdotes of the young characters with the likes of Neymar Jr, Kingsley Coman and Fridolina Rolfö, among many others.
